Know about Bodo Tribe in India. The Bodo Tribe resides in the Brahamaputra valley. The true ethnic Tribal Community of northwestern parts of Assam are Bodo Tribe & the Kachari is the sub branch of the Bodo. Hinduism minority Christianity and Bathouism is their religion. Bodo Tribes are known to be the earliest settlers in Assam. They are the first to cultivate rice and rear silkworms. The Bodos represent one of the largest of the 18 ethnic sub-groups within the Kachari group, first classified in the 19th century.

They are superstitious by nature and believe in rebirth. The Bodos represent one of the largest ethnic and linguistic groups of Northeast India. Typical Bodo last names (surname) are: Brahma, Boro, Basumatary, Daimary, Swargiary, Goyary, Khakhlary, Mushahary, Mohilary, Narzary, Iswary, Chamframary, Hajowary, Mech, Ramchiary, Baglary, Islary, Bodo, Bodosa, Baro, Borgoyary, ETC. The 1971 census report indicated that Bodos were the 8th largest scheduled-tribe (ST) group in India. In 2011, the national census showed nearly 2 million. The word ‘Bodo’ has been derived from the word ‘Bod’ means Tibet. on 10 February 2003, the Bodos were granted the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), an autonomous administrative body that has within its jurisdiction the present district of Kokrajhar, Chirang, Udalguri and Baksa. The second Bodo peace award was result of negotiation between the Bodo Liberation Tiger (BLT), the Central Government and the Assam Government. Following the peace accord, BLT was required to surrender all their arms and converted into Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), a political party now ruling the Council. Whereas, the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) another armed outfit are in ceasefire talks with the Central Government. Meanwhile, the All Bodo Student’s Union (ABSU) has intensified its democratic movement for a separate state. However, there seemed to lack of consensus on the part of political leaders to solve the Bodo debacle once and for all. As result of which today, the entire Bodoland region is on the volcano of unrest. They are the largest ethnic and linguistic group of tribes. During the early 1990s, the Bodo’s insurgency had a significant impact on forests and wildlife populations in the Manas National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The poaching of rhinos and swamp deer, in particular, severely diminished the stocks of these endangered species, to the point where they are said to be locally extinct. The damage caused by the insurgency is the main reason why the wildlife sanctuary has been on the World Heritage Council Danger List since 1992.

In 2006, Assam Assembly elections, the former Bodo Liberation Tigers (BLT) members under Hagrama Mohilary formed an alliance with the Indian National Congress and came to power in Dispur.

In 2012, violence broke in Assam out between Bodos and Muslims causing the displacement of over 400,000 people. Over 5,000 houses have been razed. They worshipped the plant called as Siju. Bodos are a peace-loving people.

Along with whole Indian communities even Bodo Communities have underwent changes and taken up several occupations. In early days Bodo tribes practiced farming and cultivation. Rice farming, tea plantation, pig & poultry farming, Silkworm Rearing is a major occupation of any Bodo Tribe. They have also developed in the years the art of craftsmanship by creating several products from bamboo. Weaving is also the popular occupation among Bodos. In very early age girls of Bodo Tribe learn the art of weaving.

Baishagu is the most cherished, springtime festival celebrated by Bodo Tribe at the advent of the New Year. Famous for its myriad colours and merriment, Baishagu is celebrated during mid April. The other festivals which Bodo Tribe celebrates are Hapsa Hatarani, Awnkham, Gwrlwi, Janai, Bwisagu and Domashi. Among all the Kherai Festival includes singing, dancing and drumming celebrated with much rejoice.

Culture of the whole society of the Bodo Tribe includes dancing, singing etc. One can find the surnames of Bodo Tribe as Bargayary, Bodosa, Boro, Owary, Wary, Ishwary, Goyary & Dwimary. They use the beautiful language of Bodo and some people in primitive age used Roman and Assamese Script. Bodos have quite exquisite dresses which are exhilirating the beauty and glamours of women. Dokna is the dress worn by Bodo women which they themselves knit on their own hands. Shawls form the major fashion among Bodos and thus loom is the most important thing used in the courtyard of the Bodo House. Bodos in the ancient times used to pray to their forefathers.
