Lee Byung-chul was the son of a wealthy landowning family. He was boarn on February 12, 1910. He attended college at Waseda University in Tokyo, but he did not complete his degree. On March 1, 1938, founding chairman Byung-Chull Lee started a business in Taegu, Korea, with 30,000 won.
